Have you ever asked for a die-hard movie lover and I didn't present myself to you? Well im so much a sucker for movies but about a few weeks ago, I was sucked up in thought after I was done watching the highly controversial movie ACRIMONY. And it dawned on me more like a self realisation that in as much as I can cry when I watch a sober movie, I can equally get very upset. After much thought I decided to do a review of this movie based on my personal judgement and a few others.
Just before I begin to add my own "versy" to the already existing controversy, Here is a a brief synopsis of the movie plot 'ACRIMONY' for the benefit of those who have not seen it yet.
As the clearly aggrieved Melinda relates her story to the shrink, the story flashes back to the early days of her relationship with Robert (Antonio Madison, playing the younger version of the character), whom she meets when they're both in college. The young Melinda (Aijona Alexus, who seems to be making a career out of playing Henson's younger self, as she assumes the same responsibility in Empire ) quickly falls for the handsome and charming Robert, although she resents him taking her virginity while she's still grieving the death of her mother. But she finds it hard to resist, especially when he puts on a record by Nina Simone and tells her, "Her voice is like going to church."
The couple's relationship hits a considerable speed bump when Melinda catches Robert cheating on her and she retaliates by ramming his RV with her car. But it's Melinda who comes out the worse for wear, suffering injuries that leave her unable to bear children.
Despite the loud objections of her sisters who accuse Robert of being a shameless gold digger, Melinda agrees to marry him even though he's impoverished. She works two jobs to support them as he works endlessly on his design of a rechargeable battery that he says will revolutionize technology. When it's finished, he assures her, he'll buy her a diamond ring, a yacht and everything else she desires.
Cut to years later, when the older Robert (Lyriq Bent) is unable to even get a meeting with Prescott Industries, apparently the only company in the world that might be interested in such an invention. Melinda becomes increasingly angry and frustrated over their living conditions. She finally she asks him for a divorce, but only after a series of plot machinations so patently ridiculous that even relating them feels onerous.
Not long after, Robert strikes it rich and, as icing on the poisonous cake, gets back together with Diana (Crystle Stewart), the woman with whom he had his dalliance years earlier and who now happens to be, you guessed it, working for Prescott Industries.
Now that we have an idea of all that, let me begin by saying: what kinda lady looks at her husband or like some would say "her man". What kinda lady looks at her man in the eyes and asks for a divorce(breakup). Even while he is trying to tell you that he never cheated and still loves you, you choose to shut your eyes to let him sign the damn paper hastily. Even if you say it was her sisters(June and Brenda) that caused it, You sef that they are telling to divorce your husband Don't you have sense!!!!
Your sisters who vehemently refused to come for your wedding all of a sudden now have a say in your marriage. Like come on! In your right senses you said "its for better or for worse" why then are those same lips saying "I want a Divorce"
Let me not throw all the shots at Melinda who was a victim of her own impatience. Robert(her husband) who talked her into buying him a car, whose semester fees were taken care of by her and still had the balls to cheat on her was a perfect description of an Asshole. People don't value what they have until they loose it. You have such a beautiful girlfriend (for those guys who always wait till the end of a movie just to find out some pretty girl's name, younger melindas full name is @Ajiona Alexus. Thank me later :) )
Who shares in your dream with her money, time and still faithful to you yet you cheat on her. It therefore means you only claimed to love her but you never did. And I won't blame Mel for ramming into his RV with her car, he deserved worse than that.
Back to Melinda; Robert cheated on her and she thought it reasonable enough to forgive him and continue with the relationship why? For the sake of Love right? For the sake of love too why did Melinda not wait an extra more(pardon my tautology) for Robert to actualize his dream (battery technology). This is a man who is a felon and has spent two years in prison and for that can't get a job. Its fine for her impatience to grow, its fine if she's feeling fed up with working two jobs at a time to make ends meet, its fine if she rages at some point, but its never fine to act like the love she once had for him was now dependent on the money which she had spent in the marriage.
Im not trying to initiate a battle of sexes here but truth is in our everyday society these things happen but no one really hears about them why? Because the reverse is the case. You find a man who has Spent a whole lot on a female, sponsored her educational pursuit, provided her with every basic necessity and more but at the end of the day she gets married to someone else. Now the story becomes "no one forced him to" , "it was a good thing he did yes, but...." but what! ! Well it was never a man's world.
Let me skip to the part where Robert came to Melindas office with a Suit and a bunch of flowers. Can you still recall the first thing Mel said when she angrily met him? She tried to make him understand that by coming to her office dressed in suit and with a bunch of flowers wouldn't make them come back together. Only to regret later on when she heard that the guy don hammer (like naija ladies would say)
Now Pause■
Let's assume that Robert actually came for them to get back together,
already she has ruined everything with her first statement.Do you know how much courage it takes to plead with someone to get back with you. You are dropping your pride, ego, worth, walls to do that. And just when you did, you are greeted with that kinda response.
Well im glad he only came to return everything which she at some point treated more valuable than love back to her. So for the people who are of the opinion that Mel deserved better and that Robert was this..that..that. I think your judgment is based on the fact that the movie was a narration of what Melinda thought and felt.
There are always two sides to a story. 9Eleven cares ♥♥♥♥

Ok I agree with you up to the point where you begin to blame this and that on Melinda. If a lady is patient enough to stick with you for eighteen years of you defining failure perfectly, what would it cost you to stick with her when she's almost fed up and keep up trying to persuade her for even a year. Sticking around shows u know her beyond her rude words, u value her beyond her anger. Why wouldn't she mistrust a man who cheated on a younger, more beautiful version of her with the same girl she's seeing around now when all he offers is a lame lame excuse? I hated her fury and the extent to which she went at the end of the movie but it was never about him hitting it big. It was about a life she spent years hoping on being another woman's possession. BTW when a woman says no, she only means try some more
ReplyDeleteFirstly, Melinda's anger was out of hand. She could not eat, sleep or do anything other than watch Robert with his new woman on social media. But come to think of it, she spend years enduring this man. Hoping one day he will give her what he promised her. I understand where the whole rage was coming from. Even if she divorced him. When he finally hit the battery stuff the best was to try and convince her of his love for her n get her back no matter what. Instead he rubbed it on her face by giving the other woman everything he promised her. Which woman wouldn't be mad. And the worse part was that it was with the same woman he cheated on her with years back. And don't forget that woman's purse was found in the truck he was driving. Robert caused the kind of anger that made u turned out to be that way. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThe whole story appears twisted.
ReplyDeleteKudos to Tyler Perry for that narrative. understanding varies;fact that you stood for me when my back was against the world does not mean I must pay you back in same coin, your kind gesture to me can't change me because salutation is no love. Dude did his best to man it up but she kept resisting him ,kudos to her sister. Truth is not all would be that patient to fight back or hang on for a love that is already repulsive. You can't eat your cake and have... In the same vein we must battle indecision and stand fully for what we believe in. Such an intriguing plot. Kudos again to Tyler Perry.. Though that boat scene got my critique mind blown, how did she gain access ... After all the restraining order...
Oh stressful marriage again 🤦🤦
